RWD Elements #1: Body, Page, Header, Header/Footer Links
The elements in RWD can be accessed by clicking on the "tab" interface which appears on the top of every new page window. There are six tabs that will change the upper portion of the window, providing choices for creating parts of a web page. The bottom portion of the window - the part that looks like an email message - and is formally called the "page body", stays the same, regardless of which tab is chosen - it is the workspace for constructing a web page.
The tab bar looks like the picture below:
Page Body
The lower section of the window is the page body. It look like a blank email message in First Class. This is actually the design space for your web page. You can type into it, change typestyles, insert graphics, create tables, and establish links - just like you would in a First Class email message. We'll practice with this section later, but for now - type "Welcome to Mr./Mrs. 'YourName' Home Page" at the top of the window and format it with the font, size, and color you desire.
Your page body sits inside the web page elements that are created by the system administrator. On this page - the blue banner, gold border, black navigation bar, and blue sidebar with high school navigation links were created by Don Feldmann. They will appear on every page you make. In fact, they appear on every page in the Sweet Home Schools web site.
The Page Tab
The first tab is entitled "Page". It is the default form when you create a new web page. It is also the place where you can name your page and set other attributes. Every page has to have a name, and it's easiest if you keep the name short and avoid using spaces in the name. You should have already titled your first page "HomePage" - do so now if you haven't. There is also a line for subject in the page information box. The subject refers to the name that will appear at the top of the window in a web browser when a user opens your page. You want to name it something logical - that tells the user what's happening. We suggest that you type "Mr./Mrs. 'YourName' Home Page" into the subject field for your home page. The other two fields in the
page information box, abstract and keywords, are used for search parameters in your site. It's not essential to put any information in them.
The Header Tab
The headers on your web page are predefined by our system administrator to keep a consistent look and feel among the entire school web site. You will not end up using this section much, unless you design a totally custom page. The words "Type in your page title here" default into the Title field. You should delete them - they will get in the way of the banner that indicates your school.
One thing you can do from this section is create a scrolling message across the top of your web page. If you like scrolling messages - click the scrolling message tab, and type your message into the box titled "Message A". You can change the font, color - and even create a web link in the scrolling message if you wish.
The Header/Footer Links Tab
Much like the "Header" tab, the Header/Footer Links tab is useful in custom pages, when you want to override some of the information imposed by the system administrator. Learning how to create custom pages will be covered in more advanced training. We suggest that you check off the box for "Include HOME link" and "Include BACK link" on the tab. This will create two important navigatonal buttons for your page, especially if you create more than one web page.
The "Other Features" tab also allows you to include some custom information on your page by clicking check boxes - see the graphic below:
